Project of the Month: May 2023

May 1, 2023 Project of the Month

This home had a decent-sized covered area along the back of their home with a low-pitched roof. Our finished product is a vaulted gable roof with an outdoor kitchen. It is now about 600 square feet and looks like it was built originally for the home.

We extended the patio out to the edge of the deeper side of the home to give the family a much larger area. The new space has three distinct areas – an outdoor kitchen, a sitting area, and a dining area. The outdoor space has two large fans, and gas carriage lights on the columns were installed.

The dining area has a custom bench that also serves as a firewood holder for the fire pit in the yard, and the flooring is a porcelain tile. The living area is in the center, with a space to cuddle up and enjoy the outdoors. The vaulted ceiling is Woodtone West Coast IPA pre-stained tongue and groove, giving the area a wide-open feel.

The outdoor kitchen outfitted with a black soapstone counter and backsplash behind the grill from Dal-Tile, is situated at the end of the space with close access to the home. The raised bar top allows for extra seating, and the kitchen has a sink, fridge, storage, wine fridge, ice maker, 32” RCS grill, and side burner. A vent hood over the grill was placed to control the amount of smoke while using the grill. All appliances are from Cunningham Gas. The columns and kitchen fascia are painted brick to match the home.

This backyard was transformed into a beautiful space for hanging out year-round.

Refresh and Relax with 3 Tips for Upgrading Your Patio

March 29, 2023 Patio Design

Summer is right around the corner, and it’s time to start thinking about refreshing your patio for the upcoming warm weather. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your existing patio or build a new one from scratch, there are plenty of ways to make your outdoor living space more functional and inviting. From adding an outdoor kitchen to redoing your fireplace, here are a few ideas for refreshing your patio in time for spring and summer.

Outdoor Kitchen

If you love to cook and entertain outside, an outdoor kitchen is a must-have. Adding a grill, sink, refrigerator, and countertops to your patio will make it easier to cook and serve food outside and will also create a central gathering spot for your guests. You can customize your outdoor kitchen to fit your needs, whether you’re a casual cook or a professional chef.

Redoing Your Fireplace

The spring days may be getting warmer, but the nights can still be chilly. If you have a fireplace on your patio, refreshing it can breathe new life into the space. You can update the look of your fireplace with a new mantle, surround, or hearth, or you can even replace the entire fireplace with a more modern or efficient model. A fireplace is a great way to warm up your patio and entertain during the spring.

Refresh Existing Patio Cover

Want to enjoy your patio during spring rain or summer heat? Patio covers can give your space a new level of functionality and a whole new look. You can repaint or stain the cover to match your home’s exterior, or you can replace it altogether with a new cover made from a different material or in a different style. A new patio cover can also provide additional shade or protection from the elements, making it more comfortable to spend time outside.

There are plenty of ways to refresh your patio in time for spring and summer. Whether you’re adding an outdoor kitchen, a new ceiling, redoing your fireplace, or refreshing your existing patio cover, these upgrades can make your outdoor living space more functional and inviting. With the right improvements, your patio can become a comfortable and enjoyable space that you’ll love to spend time in all season long.

Stucco vs. Wood Finish: Which Material Fits Your Patio Best?

February 28, 2023 Patio Design

If you’re considering building a new patio or upgrading your current one, choosing your patio’s material is one of the most important decisions in the process. Two of the most popular options are wooden and stucco finish, and while both have their own advantages, both will leave your patio looking great.

Wood Finish Patios

Patios with a wood finish are a classic choice for any outdoor space. They’re versatile and can be designed to fit any style or aesthetic, from modern and sleek to rustic and traditional. Wood patios are typically constructed from cedar or pressure-treated pine and can be wrapped in hardie, stained, and painted to match the rest of your home.

One of the main benefits of a wood-finish patio is its natural beauty. The natural grain and texture of the wood can add warmth and character to your outdoor space, making it feel like an extension of your home. Wood patios are also durable and can last for many years if properly maintained. However, if not properly maintained, a wood finish can also be more prone to damage from the elements, such as rotting, warping, and splintering.

Stucco Finish Patios

Patios with a stucco finish are a modern and stylish choice that can give your outdoor space a sleek and contemporary look. Stucco is a type of plaster applied to a base of concrete, brick, or other materials to create a smooth and seamless finish. Stucco patios can be customized with various colors and textures to fit your style and design preferences, although exactly matching texture and color with the house can sometimes be difficult.

Stucco is highly resistant to damage from the elements, including wind, rain, and sunlight. It’s also fire-resistant, making it a safe choice for outdoor spaces. One downside with stucco is its susceptibility to cracking and chipping over time. Repairs may need to be made every few years to keep your stucco looking brand-new.

Both wood and stucco finish have their own unique benefits and aesthetic styles. When making a decision, it’s important to consider your personal preferences, budget, and space requirements. Ultimately, the choice of which finish to use will depend on your design preferences and the specific needs of your patio.

Pull Out Those Green Thumbs. Gardening Season is Almost Here.

February 23, 2023 Outdoor Living

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about preparing your garden for the warmer months ahead. TCP Custom Outdoor Living understands the importance of a well-maintained garden to complement your outdoor living space, which is why If you’ve recently upgraded your patio or are thinking about doing so, preparing your garden is the perfect next step to creating your outdoor oasis. Here are a few tips on how to get your garden ready for spring:

Clean Up Your Garden

Cold winters can leave your garden looking a little worse for wear, so the first step is to give it a good clean. Start by removing any fallen leaves, branches, and debris from your lawn and flower beds. Clear out any weeds, and trim back any plants that have overgrown.

Start Planning Your Flower Beds

Spring is a great time to start planning your flower beds. First, consider which plants you want to grow and where they’ll thrive best in your garden. Then, consider the colors and textures of the plants and how they’ll complement your patio area.

Prepare Your Soil

A good plant is only as good as its soil. Use a garden fork or tiller to loosen up the dirt and add some organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure. Doing this will help to improve the soil structure and add vital nutrients to your plants.

Plant Spring Bulbs

One of the easiest ways to add color to your garden in the spring is to plant bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses, and tulips. Many garden centers sell pre-grown bulbs ready for planting in the spring.

Install Garden Features

If you’re looking to add some extra features to your backyard, consider installing a water feature, such as a fountain or pond, or creating a seating area for relaxing. These features can help to add interest to your garden and create a calming and peaceful atmosphere.

A well-maintained garden not only makes your outdoor space look more attractive but can also provide a calming and enjoyable space for you to relax in. By following these tips, you can create a beautiful garden that will enhance your patio area and provide a tranquil haven for you to enjoy throughout spring and summer.

Ready to Binge Watch From Your Backyard? Make Sure Your TV is Prepped For Outdoor Viewing.

February 9, 2023 Outdoor Living

If you’re looking to add a little extra entertainment to your patio, an outdoor TV is a great option. But with so many options on the market, it can be tough to know which one to choose. Here are a few things to consider when shopping for an outdoor TV:

What to buy

Although there are TVs made specifically for outdoor use, they’re usually more expensive than their indoor counterparts. A larger TV, around 55+ inches, is best for large gatherings or viewing from a distance.

Optimal Viewing Settings

The biggest challenge to overcome with patio TVs is glare. This can make watching shows or sports in the daytime difficult. Turn up the brightness setting on your TV, and if possible, look for backlight settings that’ll allow the TV to increase its brightness.

Mounting Options

There are plenty of places to mount your TV for the best viewing experience. A good rule of thumb is mounting your TV lower than you’d expect. This not only eliminates glare but keeps your audience from craning their neck to watch. Swiveling TV mounts can also allow you to move your TV from left to right, depending on the time of day or furniture layout. Motorized mounts will also allow you to move the TV to your liking at the push of a button.

Keep it Covered

Unfortunately, most electronics aren’t able to withstand the elements. Luckily, there are plenty of tarps and covers that will protect your TV from rain or wind when you’re not using it. This will keep your TV in mint condition for years to come.

Ultimately, the best outdoor TV for your patio will depend on your specific needs and budget. Take into consideration the above factors and consider the TV options available. With the right TV, you’ll be enjoying your favorite shows and movies while relaxing on your patio in no time.

If you’re not looking to go all-out this year or want to keep most of the decorations indoors, a little can still go a long way. This patio cover in Flower Mound, Texas kept its warm and woodsy while still looking festive.

The classic Christmas tree is still just as eye-catching outdoors as it is indoors. Not to mention, the wreaths and added table decorations bring a lot to the table (pun intended) without overpowering the feel of the patio. With a grand fireplace to huddle around, this patio is ready for the holiday season.

A Patio That Blends Indoor and Outdoor Decor

Just because you’re decorating for the holidays doesn’t mean you have to give up on your patio’s style. Needless to say, these halls are fully decked out. Everything from the garland above the lit fireplace, to the beautiful tree, to the Christmas-themed pillows are the perfect touch for the holiday season. This patio does a great job of adding to its already cozy atmosphere with a few Christmas touches.

With the holidays never more than a year away, take full advantage of your outdoor living space and decorate to your heart’s content.

Should I Add A Privacy Wall?

November 22, 2022 Outdoor Safety

Wanting to enjoy your patio to the fullest without worrying about the outside world? Here are a few benefits of building a privacy wall in your outdoor living space.

Privacy and Seclusion

This may seem obvious, but privacy walls are great for blocking out neighbors’ views. If your fences are short, you don’t want your neighbors looking in, or you want to relax in your own space without worry, privacy walls are a great solution. Many privacy walls also incorporate a fireplace or TV to add even more functionality and privacy.

Weather Resistance

Windy days can be a drag. If you’re in an area that gets a lot of wind and want to keep your hair in place, a privacy wall can provide a barrier between you and the elements. Not to mention, privacy walls also provide great protection from the sun, making summer days in the shade that much better.

Sound Barrier

If you live next to a busy street, it may seem like your days of relaxing outside are over. Fear not, because privacy walls can be the perfect protection between you and the rest of the neighborhood. Not only does it block out outside sound, but it also helps block the sound you’re making.

Style

There are plenty of privacy walls to match your patio’s style. From wood to plastic to iron to aluminum, you’re sure to find a design that fits your vision. They can also be covered with various plants and flowers to create a secluded garden atmosphere.

If you think a privacy wall might be just what you need, let us know during the design process of your project. Knowing your wants and needs are important to the process and allows for more satisfaction with the finished product. With the versatility they bring, privacy walls may be the perfect addition to your patio.

How should I heat my patio?

November 3, 2022 Outdoor Living

No matter what time of year it is, you deserve to enjoy your patio. While we’ve previously talked about ways to cool off your patio on hot summer days, what happens when the temperature starts dropping?

Here are a few of our favorite patio heating options:

Fireplace

You can’t beat the classic fireplace. Whether wood or natural gas, it’s hard to deny the crackling, cozy comfort that a fireplace brings. Not only does it help heat up your outdoor living space, but it’s a beautiful addition to your porch that everyone will gravitate around.

Fire Pit

A fire pit is a great way to bring people together while still staying warm. Like fireplaces, fire pits are mostly wood or natural gas-based, but their size and central locations are great for huddling around. If you don’t want to add a permanent pit made of brick or stone to your backyard, you can purchase more portable options, allowing you to store the pit when you’re not using it.

Patio Heater

Heaters from brands like Bromic and Innova can both be installed under your patio cover, which allows for them to be directly connected to your power source. This way, you won’t have to worry about filling up a propane tank, just enjoying your warm outdoor living space.

If you don’t want to install a permanent heater, portable umbrella heaters have become increasingly popular over the years. Usually running on propane, these heaters can keep your patio warm throughout the winter without taking up too much space. This is the way to go if you’re looking for a non-invasive, portable heater.

Regardless of which heating option you choose, the only other things you’ll need are some chairs, some hot cocoa, and your loved ones, and you’re set for a great winter.
