Keeping Your Patio Pristine: Tips for Cleaning and Caring for 4 Common Materials

Your patio is an extension of your home, a space where you relax, entertain, and enjoy the outdoors. Maintaining its beauty and functionality is essential to clean and care for its surfaces properly. We work with many different materials, but in this article, we’ll focus on concrete, stone tile, granite countertops, and wooden beams, as they each have a few specific needs.

Concrete Surfaces

Concrete is a durable and popular choice inside and outside covered patios, but it can occasionally be used for a good clean.

Basic Cleaning

To clean concrete surfaces, start by sweeping away debris and dirt. Then, use mild detergent and water to scrub the surface with a stiff brush or broom. Finally, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water and let it dry completely before using the patio.

Deep Cleaning

For stubborn stains, you can use a solution of water and vinegar or a commercial concrete cleaner. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the concrete.

Long-term Care

Regularly resealing concrete helps protect against moisture and stains. Choose a high-quality concrete sealer and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Additionally, consider using a coat of wax to add an extra layer of protection and enhance the concrete’s shine.

Stone Tile Surfaces

Stone tile adds elegance and natural beauty to any patio, and you’ll clean it like you care for concrete.

Basic Cleaning

To clean stone tile surfaces, sweep away loose debris and dirt using a broom or leaf blower. Then, wash the tiles with mild detergent and warm water using a soft-bristled brush or mop. After cleaning, rinse the tiles thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.

Deep Cleaning

For tough stains, you can use a specialized stone cleaner. Again, avoid using acidic or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the stone.

Long-term Care

Resealing stone tile surfaces regularly protects them from moisture and stains. Choose a penetrating sealer designed for natural stone and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Granite Countertops

We love granite countertops for the sophistication and functionality they can add to outdoor kitchens and bar areas. Here’s how to keep them looking like new.

Basic Cleaning

To clean granite countertops, wipe them down regularly with a mixture of mild detergent and warm water using a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrub brushes, which can scratch the granite surface. After cleaning, rinse the countertops with clean water and dry them thoroughly to prevent water spots and streaks.

Deep Cleaning

You can use a specialized granite cleaner or a paste of baking soda and water for tough stains.

Long-Term Care

Consider applying a granite polish or sealer periodically to maintain the natural shine.

Wooden Beams

Wooden beams lend warmth and charm to patio structures like pergolas and vaulted ceilings. They rarely need cleaning, but here’s what to do when it comes.

Basic Cleaning

Remove debris and dirt using a broom or brush to clean wooden beams. Then, wash the wood with mild detergent and water using a soft-bristled brush or sponge. Avoid high-pressure washers or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the wood.

After cleaning, rinse the wooden beams with clean water and let them dry completely before applying a protective finish.

Deep Cleaning

You can also use an outdoor deck cleaner on wood surfaces like beams for stubborn stains.

Long-Term Care

Consider using a wood sealer or stain to protect the wood from moisture, UV rays, and insect damage. Reapply the sealer or stain to keep the wood looking its best.

Patios that Last

When we design and build a patio, we do everything we can to ensure it stands the test of time. Once we’re gone, proper cleaning and maintenance are essential for preserving the beauty and functionality of your patio surfaces. By following these tips, you can keep your concrete, stone tile, granite countertops, and wooden beams looking pristine for years to come, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space to the fullest.

Recipe of the Month: Top Ten BBQ Secrets

Is the secret in the sauce when it comes to BBQ? Or is it in the entire process… Smoking it vs. grilling it? Marinating vs. rub? When you do get the meat just right, how about a secret sauce recipe (see below)? For the month of March we are giving you the scoop on BBQ perfection from a long-time Houston master of the Que… HarlonsBBQ!  Top ten BBQ secrets, read here!

Jack’s Secret Barbecue Sauce

Full disclosure… we have no clue who Jack is, but man this recipe is tasty!

  • 4-8 ounces of your favorite store-bought BBQ sauce (sweet)
  • 2 cups apple cider vinegar (white will work also)
  • 3 tblsp lemon juice (approx. 1 lemon)
  • 1 1/2 tblsp brown sugar
  • 1 tblsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1 tblsp hot pepper sauce (Tabasco, Frank’s, Trappy’s, Louisiana)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper (fresh ground if you have it)
  • Add more or less of your store-bought sauce, to your taste.

You don’t have to cook this one! Just combine the ingredients, put in a jar with a tight lid (for occasional shaking), place in the refrigerator for a couple of days before the feast. Give it a vigorous shake once in a while.

If you are in a hurry, you may simmer the ingredients for about 25 minutes to serve immediately.

The Texas Custom Patios Promise

Our Process

At Texas Custom Patios, we really get to know our customers. When you choose to build with us, you get your own project developer who will get to know you, your goals, and your style, and will oversee your entire outdoor living project, from start to finish.

Schedule your free consultation today by calling our office or filling out our contact form. We will send one of our experienced project developers to your home to gather information about your project. If we can provide an outdoor living project that meets your budget, then we will create a proposal for you.

Not sure how to budget for your outdoor living project? Look at our dream patio budgeting guide for some ideas.

What Can I Expect During This Visit?

  • You will see photos of similar projects to help us determine your preferences
  • We will take measurements and photos of the project area
  • We will ask lots of questions about your expectations
  • We will talk to you about your project budget

DESIGN, PRICING, & PROPOSAL

After your project developer visits your home, we will provide you with a proposal that includes an exact quote proposal for your project. On average, the proposal will be completed in about a week. This proposal will include a design drawing with specifications and dimensions and rendered views and elevations so you can see what the project will look like after completion.

Your project developer will schedule an in-person meeting with you to go over your proposal and answer any questions. Once we have signed a contract, You can visit our office showroom to view samples and make final selections for your project.

EXACT QUOTE

When we say “exact quote,” we mean it. This quote is not an estimate, and there will be no surprise expenses during the course of your project. If changes or additions are made during the construction process, we will address those changes as they occur.

HOA APPROVAL AND CITY PERMITS

Some areas require a permit or HOA approval for outdoor living projects. The only thing your project developer needs in order to get approval for you is a copy of your lot survey. We will provide all of the additional required information.

If you live in a municipality that requires a building permit, we will handle every submission, inspection, and approval required. Depending on the location, this process can take between four and six weeks.

MATERIALS AND SCHEDULING

Scheduling of your project will depend on several factors — how many jobs we are currently working on, the weather, or if you have a particular deadline for an event at your home.

Materials are ordered in a timely fashion so they will be available when we begin construction on your project. Some materials are readily available while others require a special order. We will get you to make selections on stone and other materials quickly after the signing of a contract in case there are time constraints on having the material ready when needed.

Our crews work on several projects at a time. Many times throughout your project, you will see one crew work, have another trade come in to do their part and then the first crew come back to finish up their part of the project. We try to keep production of your project continuous once we begin working, but there may be times when we have some lag time between trades.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND COMPLETION

Your project will be managed and supervised by your Project Developer — the one that first met with you, created your project specifications, and signed off on your dream outdoor living space. Your Project Developer will communicate the construction schedule to you. They will be available at all times via email or phone before, during and after construction of your project. If you ever have any questions or concerns about your project, they are the one to contact.

Upon completion of your project, your Project Developer will walk through the outdoor living space with you to ensure you are completely satisfied with the completed project. We take pride in our work and want you to be delighted with your new space.

WARRANTY PROTECTION

We provide you with a strong written warranty for both material and workmanship. We stand behind what we build and want you to know we will come and make repairs if necessary.

REFERRALS

We have two goals when we are building outdoor living spaces — one is to satisfy you by exceeding your expectations and building you your dream outdoor living space. The other goal is to have you refer us to your friends and neighbors.

We want you to feel confident enough in us to share your experience with others. We do have a referral program in place and will send you a special thank you if one of your friends or family gives us a chance to build their outdoor living space.

Texas Custom Patios’ 15 Year Anniversary: Our Story

Texas Custom Patios is a family-owned and operated business located in Houston, Texas and Irving, Texas, but our service area covers most of the greater Houston area and parts of the Dallas – Fort Worth area. We have completed more than 1,600 outdoor living projects since we opened our doors in 2004. As we celebrate our 15 year anniversary we thought it would be neat to talk with one of our owners, Robert Douglass, to hear some of the stories that built TCP into what it is today.

Growning up was this what you wanted to do?

I always had an interest in building and in outdoor living.  My father was handy while I was growing up, building and repairing anything around the house.  When I became a homeowner, I took on many of the same types of projects:  tile, flagstone, decks, pergolas, kitchen and bath remodels, etc.   I never considered doing this for a career until I moved back to Houston in 2001 and saw thousands of new homes in Fort Bend County and no company focused specifically on outdoor living.

The first half of my career I worked as a YMCA director for 18 years.  While it seems like a complete 180 from construction, I had many facility responsibilities.  I planned new facilities, additions, and renovations, from working with architects, to selecting contractors, to supervising the projects.  It was one of my favorite parts of the job.
Do you recall your first project?
The first project I  built was for a friend…a small wood deck and pergola, and a slate patio.  Before we built the project, I tried out the framing crew on a project at my house and worked with them.  The business started with smaller projects that didn’t require many trades. But with each new job, the projects became more complicated… roof structures, screened porches, lots of masonry work, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, entertainment packages.  Because we are usually designing and building to look original to the home, we’ve had to constantly evolve and find new trades. But the first few projects were very simple
What was your vision for the company in the beginning?
We have a great opportunity in our business to create a space that will potentially be our client’s favorite “room” in the house.  We get to take a blank slate and turn the backyard into a much more usable space.  The vision was to offer a turnkey experience that included creative design, managing approvals (HOA and permitting), and then building a high-quality, all-inclusive project. Our vision was to serve the entire Greater Houston Area by having Project Developers who lived and worked in different service areas.  Finally, we hoped to develop a trade base of craftsmen who are experts in their particular area; who can grow with us; and who can meet the challenges of increasingly complex jobs. Ultimately, we wanted to complete a final project that exceeds the clients expectations, helps them enjoy their backyard, and adds value to their home.
What is your vision for the company now?
First, we see our design work as something that really sets us apart. We are constantly providing continuing education to our Project Developers so that every client is getting the best project to meet their practical needs and their aesthetic wants. We want to be on top of the latest trends and products, and we even want to pioneer some new ideas based on our vast experience in outdoor living.
Second, we want to give our clients a positive experience on the project management side of the business.  That’s what turns into good reviews and referrals.  That means creating best practices for scheduling and supervising trades and making consistent progress on jobs through to project completion.  It’s not easy… many factors impact that, including weather and bottlenecks with some of our trades.  In the areas where we have bottlenecks, we are constantly trying to broaden and improve our trade base.

Finally, in 2015, we opened a new office in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  We realize we have a business model that is replicable and we hope to explore opportunities to continue expanding into other markets.  But for now, we have our hands full just serving the entire Houston and DFW areas. Katherine (owner and wife) and I grew up in Conroe and we recognize that we have only a minor presence north of The Woodlands… Montgomery County is an area of growth that we will pursue in the next couple of years.

What has been the most rewarding?

By far the most rewarding aspect of creating a new business has been the understanding that we are providing a livelihood for over one hundred people.  Not just the full-time employees in two offices, but dozens of sub-contractor crews who primarily work for TCP going from job to job. Each of those subs have numerous employees creating long-term relationships that have been rewarding.

What has been tough?

The biggest challenge is managing growth.  When do we bring on a new Project Developer?  How do we grow the trade base to meet the increased demand? So many questions we have to ask ourselves along the way.

What sets TCP apart from other remodel companies in your eyes?

At Texas Custom Patios, we offer personalized service and flexible payment terms, and when you choose to work with us, you’ll work with the same project developer every step of the way, from the preliminary design stage to project completion and clean-up.

We specialize in providing turnkey design solutions for outdoor living, including patio coversoutdoor kitchensscreened porches and patios; room additionspergolas and decksoutdoor fireplaces; and more.

Any funny stories to share along the way??
Although we’ve built over 1600 projects, we’ve probably visited 10,000 people over the years. When you meet that many people, you’re going to run into some characters. Like the homeowner who wanted me to look out his back window so I could see that he didn’t have a “money tree.”

The Best of the Best

Chances are if you are reading this blog right now, you are doing some patio pondering.  So will it be a covered patio or pergola? Outdoor kitchen or dining (or both)?  Maybe a fireplace or perhaps a beautifully lit fire pit?  Stone, granite, paint color … so many things to think about, but your first question should be … why Texas Custom Patios?

Let us help you answer that first!  We are a family-owned and operated business with offices located in Houston and Irving, Texas.  We proudly serve the greater Houston area and parts of Dallas/Fort Worth.  We have completed thousands of outdoor living projects since we opened our patio doors in 2004.

The TCP Difference

We offer personalized service and flexible payment terms, and when you choose to work with us, you’ll work with the same project developer every step of the way.  Start to finish, preliminary design stage all the way to project completion and clean-up.  It’s nice to have one main person that you can really count on each day.

We specialize in providing turnkey design solutions for outdoor living, including patio covers; outdoor kitchens; screened porches; room additions; pergolas and decks; outdoor fire features and so much more!  View our portfolio here to get a better idea of what you would like.

We Stand Behind Our Work

At Texas Custom Patios, we’re confident in our work, and we want you to feel confident, too!  That’s why we offer a two-year warranty for materials and workmanship, and a five-year warranty for structural components of your home improvement project.  We also have one million dollars in liability insurance to protect against accidents and injury.

Exact Quote Promise

When you schedule a consultation with one of our experienced project developers, you’ll receive more than just a ballpark figure.  We’ll tell you exactly how much your outdoor living project will cost – down to the penny!  So many times if you get a bid from multiple builders, they will give you a soft bid to entice you, but the costs add up as the project gets built, leaving you with something much higher than you were promised.   Every estimate of ours includes a detailed drawing with specifications and dimensions, plus rendered views and elevations -so you can see a preview of your completed project!  It’s like your day dreams come to life on paper, making it that much more fun to start building!

The Best of the Best (we always come full circle)

Year after year we are awarded and recognized for being the best in the business.  We constantly receive an A+ from the BBB (read our reviews here), and we are noticed by everyone from the National Association of Home Builders to fans on Houzz.  We love hearing from our customers and sharing the stories of how what we build for them has changed their lives.

We hope you will give us the chance to build a dream for you.

The Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) Houston’s Best PRISM Awards are an annual event designed to recognize excellence within Houston’s homebuilding industry and to support their efforts. Categories in Construction and Remodeling included price range and specific room designs and in the Developer category, promotion awards were presented for TV, Radio, Print, Outdoor, Direct Mail, and Special Events. The People awards honored excellence in sales, marketing, and construction supervision. This year’s award recipients were chosen by a panel of premier industry professionals from around the country. Judging criteria varied according to the category, but all category winners were required to be active members of the GHBA in good standing, and to have shown commitment and excellence to the homebuilding industry as a whole.
